Choosing a Car Stereo

Here's my little overview on choosing the right stereo system for your car.Now this can really become a tedious difficult task, especially for people with little or no knowledge about the subject. This requires extensive research so you can determine if you are receiving the best deal possible for your car and your pocket. Before reaching a car stereo dealer, you may want to check and at least try to understand all the components of a car stereo. By doing so, you can choose which components you would like to have installed in your car. This is a list of the most basic that make part of a car stereo:

1. Decks - Car stereos obviously can't work without a deck. A deck consists of any piece of equipment ranging from cassette decks and CD players to mini discs and MP3. The deck is by most considered the glue that holds the car stereo together. The deck controls the general output of the sound and allows you to control the music that is being played. Most car stereodecks have a minimum 4-channel output for all your speakers. If you want more power than what your speakers can actually manage, you would basically want to consider getting an amplifier.

2. Amplifiers - Amplifiers provide the power needed to blast the music in your car. The more power your amplifier has, of course the louder the sound system is going to be. An amplifier can have a range from 1 to 7 channels. The number of channels in your amplifier is the number of speakers you can hookup in a series circuit.

3. Speakers - Speakers are where the sound from the stereo is emitted. Different types of speakers are designed to produce different frequencies. Higher frequencies provide the capacity for more sound and produce a higher level sound as well. The efficiency of the speakers is what will determine how far the sound will travel. If you want to add some blast and make the sound travel far, you will need speakers with a higher frequency.

4. Subwoofers - If you plan on owning a high-tech car stereo system then you should get yourself a subwoofer. They complete the sound by providing high efficiency of low frequencies through the bass. In else words, the subwoofer is the what makes your car vibrate. A subwoofer needs to be enclosed in either a box or possibly the trunk of your vehicle. Remember to keep this in mind when budgeting the cost of your stereo system.

Everyone who buys a car, new or used, would definitely want to maintain it on regular basis so that he could enjoy driving and is not faced with any problem. However, very few people actually manage to maintain their cars. Car maintenance is not an easy task; it varies from car to car. In this article, we will cover some of the very fundamental points that are essential in maintaining your car. We will now mention some of the basic car maintenance tips that will help to keep your up to date:

  1. Maintain the body of your car: If anything that makes your car look new than it is its body. The body represents the outer look of your car and if you keep it shiny and protect it from corrosion, it will always give a new look. Here is how you can take good care of your car’s body:
    • Wash your car regularly and wax it to remove any bugs and dirt that can mount up and easily wear away the paint your car. Waxing your car also keeps it shiny and glossy.
    • In coastal areas like Karachi the atmosphere is very humid and salty; this can harm your car’s body. Proper undercoating and rust proofing can protect your car from such harms.
    • Remove any deep scratches, stone chips or paint marks left by other objects before the rust starts to mount on to the body of your car.
  2. Maintain the interior of your car: The maintenance of the interior your car is as important as its exterior. A nice and clean interior gives your car a great look and also affects your health. It really is a wonderful experience to drive such a car. You can maintain the interior of your car by:
    • Vacuuming it regularly.
    • Cleaning its seats, doors and carpets.
    • Cleaning and polishing the dash board of your car regularly.
  3. Maintain the engine of your car: What could be more important than the engine of your car? We know for sure that good engine keeps a car strong and durable. Here is how you can maintain the engine of your car properly:
    • Change the engine oil of your car regularly.
    • Use synthetic oil instead of usual mineral oils.
    • Check the coolant level at proper time.
  4. Maintaining the transmission of your car: The most complicated and expensive part of the car is its automatic transmission system. It is also one of the less reliable parts of any car and if defected, it can cause serious safety issues to the car. You can maintain the transmission system of your car by:
    • Preventing it from overheating.
    • Fixing the leakage of transmission fluid.
    • Proper and suitable use of overdrive
    • Servicing the transmission from car make dealers.
    • Using original pars only.

This Carlsbad, California, start-up company has unveiled the production version of its 3- wheel, 200 mpg-plus 2e and recently obtained private funding to move the project closer to dealerships.

Aptera President and CEO Paul Wilbur says the company is awaiting the U.S. Department of Energy’s decision on Aptera’s application for a $184-million loan from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program.

“We completed the first close of our recent round of funding last month, and one more financing hurdle remains,” Wilbur states. “When it’s complete, it will take about 11 months to start our full-volume launch next year.”

Manufacturing will be based in a 200,000-square-foot facility in Oceanside, California, and create 500 new jobs. As production ramps up, that number will likely increase by 2000. Adding supplier employees to that total, Wilbur estimates that Aptera production will add 12,500 jobs to the labor market.

What they will be creating is the Aptera 2e, a 3-wheel machine classified as a motorcycle, but with some design elements of an earth-bound airplane. It’s the nose, front wheel spats and tricycle layout that give that impression as the 2e drives toward you, despite the lack of wings and propellers. From the back, it’s a pure aerodynamic exercise.

Aptera’s big story is in the electric drivetrain that combines the equipment of such firms as General Electric and Borg Warner with lithium-ion nano-phosphate batteries from 123 Systems. In the 1800-lb. composite-bodied 2e, the 110-horsepower, 232 lb.-ft. of torque electric drive system has a claimed range of 100 miles. Recharging time from full discharge is set at 6 to 11 hours. The front-drive machine is said to reach 60 mph in 9.0 seconds.

Dimensions of the Aptera 2e have it as long as a Ford Focus, two inches wider than a Maybach and as tall as a Honda Civic. And the unusual aero form of the Aptera makes it a crowd-stopper.

Still, the 2e is also quite usable. You enter through butterfly-style doors that were part of the refining process for the production 2e. Not only do they now have conventional up-down windows, but the doors have been reshaped to make entry and exit easier.

Once in the Aptera, you feel as though you are in a nicely designed small car. And all the safety systems are in place from belts to airbags. Behind you is a luggage area that will accommodate several bags...including the all-important golfbags.

Chief Engineer of the 2e is Tom Reichenbach, who was the Vehicle Engineering Manager on the Ford GT. Among the firms he enlisted to help with the Aptera is well-known race team Pratt & Miller, which helped optimize the design and aided with finite element analysis.

Immediately after the press conference announced the production 2e, it was shipped to Michigan to compete for the $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize. This competition pits 40 teams from 11 countries to prove it is possible to create a production- ready vehicle that can achieve 100 mpg.

You can buy the best speakers there ever is in the market but the location of the speakers play an important role in excellent sound production. There are other factors that play an important role in making your speakers sound their best although they might seem small and are mostly ignored by people but that is why they end up compromising on less when their speakers are capable of playing a lot better. A few simple tips I believe can make a lot of difference in improving your speaker’s productivity. It also depends on which environment you have your speakers installed as the factors for better sound production in cars is different than homes. Further I will advice few important tips to make your sound system’s productivity better in a car environment.

As an environment of a car and surroundings are smaller therefore the speakers made for cars are built in such a way to deliver maximum sound with taking less space in your trunk or interior. The speakers these days come in sizes and shapes that are easily adjustable and fitted in your car that do not affect the sound productivity. So basically the size and shape of the speakers you have purchased or installed in your car matters a lot as every different shape or size has its own quality.

The same way the commotion and unwanted noises can affect the performance of the speakers and subwoofers. Some of the other major factors that help in bringing out the maximum potential of your speakers being played in the car are:

Dynamat Kit: These products are used for lessening the noises of the road. These products especially Dynamat is designed for subwoofer vibration controlling and not just that but this product controls the excessive and unwanted noises of the running engine, wind gushes and tire’s sound to maximize the sound of the speakers, subwoofers and other equipment you have installed for playing your tracks.

Bass Blockers: A subwoofer is purely made for bass production but all of the speakers in high volume create an irritating and non-accurate bass that just spoils the fun. Bass blockers simply block those noises giving the entire control of bass production to the subwoofers that are installed in your trunk this way every speaker and woofer gets to do their job and the sound quality is fabulous.

Foam Baffles: The foam installed between your speakers and body car is to firstly stop the irritating noises that will be produced while your speakers are thumping and banging against the car body and making unwanted sound. The second role it plays is to keep dirt and other dust particles away from your speakers making them durable and adding a couple of more years to their life.

Equalizing Path Lengths: The location of each speaker and their distance from each other is vital for excellent sound production. The surround system in this case can be taken as an example where the speakers, rear and front, play a significant part in bringing out the sound production that has to be expected by a branded speaker system. The kick-panels installed in the trunk of your car should at least have 5” difference from each other and so on.

A few basic tips like these can really get the most out of your stereo system. You can get more on this from websites or a professional that can really help you out in installing your speakers with the tips and tricks that will let you enjoy your car audio system to the fullest.

Today’s mobile audio components resemble sophisticated home audio components and are nothing like the under dash 8-track or cassette players many of us remember. Far from simple tape players with a radio, they are full-blown entertainment-convenience/safety-navigation centers with more ins and outs than a telephone switchboard and some are even upgradeable to add more stuff. Even factory-installed systems, which compete with after market systems, are more complex and loaded with features than a few short years ago.

Entertainment Features

Mobile Movie Theater

Why wait to get home and watch your favorite movie or concert on DVD when you can do it while stuck in traffic? It's also a great way to keep kids occupied on long trips with movies and video games. You wouldn’t know it by looking at the dashboard, but with the push of a button the color screen pops-up and you have a movie theater in your car complete with surround sound. The new Kenwood DNX-8120 Multimedia DVD Receiver is an example of a higher-end mobile theater system. Pass the popcorn!

Dual-Zone Audio/Video Operation

Many systems offer Dual-Zone operation so the passengers in the front can enjoy one source and those in the rear seats can enjoy another. Many also feature headphone jacks in the rear to prevent interference between programs.

Multi-Disc Changers

Don’t bother storing your CD’s or DVDs. Load them into your car’s multi-disc changer and keep an entire library of discs ready to enjoy in your car. Here are a few examples of multi-disc changers from Pioneer (Compare Prices), Kenwood (Compare Prices) and Alpine(Compare Prices).

Best Buy and Circuit City also have a good selection of disc changers.

HD Radio and Satellite Radio Tuners

In addition to AM and FM, you can enjoy HD Radio and/or Satellite Radio, either built-in or by adding a tuner to the system. HD Radio (Compare Prices) and XM (Compare Prices) or Sirius (Compare Prices). Satellite Radio offer better audio performance and clearer reception than AM or FM, in addition to more programming choices.

Convenience/Safety Features

USB Ports

It was just a few years ago that USB ports became standard fare on PCs and laptops, now the front panel of many car entertainment systems have a USB connection. With the USB port you can play your music collection stored on a USB flash drive, or connect an iPod, view its contents on the front panel screen and control it from the front panel of an in-dash receiver.

Rear View Safety Cameras

Typically used in recreational vehicles, many automobiles have rear view safety cameras that give the driver a clear view behind the car while backing up. The lives of many children have been saved because of rear-view safety cameras and countless bicycles and skateboards have been spared from being run over.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Cellphone Adaptors

This feature is just in time for the new laws in many states that restrict or forbid hand-held cell phone use while driving. The phone connects to the system via the USB port and the phone can be controlled on the in-dash receiver’s front panel. The phone can be answered by touching a button on the front panel and the phone’s contact list can be viewed on the display. When the phone rings, the audio system automatically goes into Mute mode. Even the phone’s signal and battery level appear on the receiver’s front panel display.

Remote Control

If you thought the coffee table in your living room was cluttered with remote controls, check out your front seat. Today’s mobile entertainment centers come with full-featured remote controls to make system operation easier– Just what we need, something else to distract drivers.

Garage Door and Security Gate Controls

Some vehicle entertainment systems have optional switches to permit control of garage door openers, security gates, or home lighting systems. When you pull in the driveway you can turn on selected lights in your home.

Navigation System Features

SD Cards

Navigation systems are nothing new, but some of the features are. Some navigation systems have SD Card inputs to upgrade old maps with newer versions. One of the newest navigation systems is the Haas GPS Tracker, a sophisitcated yet affordable system that provides vehicle owner's peace of mind. In addition standard GPS features, the GPS Tracker sends email or text message alerts to a vehicle's owner if any preset driving restrictions have been violated, such as maximum speed, geographic location, etc. This is a very useful feature for parents of new teen drivers.

Real Time Traffic Information

Some navigation systems can subscribe to Traffic TMC or XM Radio Nav Traffic services to provide real-time traffic and weather information to drivers. The system overlays real-time data over the map to provide current traffic data so drivers can navigate around traffic jams.

Upgradeable Features

What if you find a feature or upgrade that your vehicle’s system doesn’t have, but you want? Not to worry. Kenwood (Compare Prices) and Alpine, for example, have introduced system expansion products that permit adding features to the in-dash receiver without replacing the factory system or the in-dash receiver. Known as external media controllers, these components are installed under the dashboard or seat and feature multiple connectivity options to add audio, video, navigation and almost any other accessories to the vehicle, without replacing or modifying the factory installed system. It's a great solution for owners of leased vehicles or those concerned about invalidating the vehicle warranty if the factory system is modified.

Good Driving!

Your car's suspension system is an intricate network of cooperating (usually, anyway) components designed to give you a smooth, even, stable ride. Since the suspension is ground zero when it comes to road abuse, the parts wear out, and even break. If your car doesn't seem to ride like it used to, you may have a problem down below.

It may seem daunting to try to diagnose steering or suspension problems, but if you attack it systematically, you have a fighting chance. Just find the symptom that sounds like you and see what the probable causes are.

Money Saver: Before you start replacing parts, it's a good idea to check all of the mounting nuts and bolts to be sure the problem isn't being caused by simple looseness!

Symptom: Pulling to One Side While Driving

·         Low or uneven tire pressure - check tire inflation.

·         Uneven tire wear - check front tires for even wear and replace both front tires.

·         Alignment bad - check and adjust wheel alignment.

·         Steering components bad - inspect tie rods and steering rack.

·         Sticking brake caliper - inspect brakes for uneven wear or excessive heat. Repair as needed.

Symptom: Flip-flop wheel shimmy. Wheels seem to wander and wiggle rapidly back and forth.

·         Low or uneven tire pressure - check tire inflation.

·         One or more wheels out of balance - have wheels balanced.

·         Uneven or excessive tire wear - inspect tires and replace in pairs.

·         Vehicle out of alignment - check and adjust wheel alignment.

·         Worn steering components - inspect tie rods and steering rack for excessive play and repair if needed.

Symptom: Proposing over bumps or uneven roads. Proposing, aka bouncing, dipping, diving. Car keeps going up and down after you go over a bump.

·         Worn shocks or struts - replace shocks and/or struts.

·         Broken or slipped leaf spring - inspect leaf springs and repair or replace as needed.

Symptom: Steering seems to be slipping. As you turn the wheel or hold it in a turned position, it feels like its slipping slightly back and forth.

·         Low power steering fluid - add fluid as needed.

·         Loose or worn power steering belt - tighten or replace belt.

·         Bad power steering pump - have checked for pressure and replace if needed.

·         Leaking power steering rack - inspect steering rack for leaks and replace rack if needed.

·         Broken steering rack mounts - inspect mounts for excessive play and repair as needed

Symptom: Hard to steer. Wheel is hard to turn, especially while moving at slow speed.

Symptom: Steering wheel vibrates at speed. Excessive vibration while traveling a constant speed, especially highway speeds.

·         Wheels out of balance - have wheels re-balanced.

·         Tires worn unevenly or excessively

·         Loose wheel bolts - check wheel lugs for correct tightness.

Symptom: Loose or sloppy steering. Steering has excessive play and wanders from side to side.

·         Power steering fluid low - check power steering fluid and add if needed.

·         Worn strut bearings - inspect strut bearings for play and replace in pairs.

·         Worn or broken tie rods or steering rack - inspect steering components and replace as necessary.

·         Worn ball joints - inspect ball joints and replace if needed.

·         Broken steering rack mounts - inspect steering rack mounts and repair or replace (some cars can be fixed, others require replacement of the entire steering rack.)

Symptom: Clunking over bumps. Feeling clunks and knocks through the steering wheel when you go over bumps or even cracks in the road.

·         Worn shocks or struts - replace shocks and/or struts as indicated.

·         Worn strut bearings - inspect strut bearings and replace both if needed.

·         Worn ball joints - inspect ball joints for play and replace if needed.

Symptom: Screeching and screaming. Steering emits loud screeching when steering at low speeds, such as parking.

·         Low power steering fluid - add power steering fluid as needed.

·         Loose power steering belt - adjust power steering belt.

·         Worn power steering belt - replace and adjust power steering belt.

Remember, this is a guide to help you diagnose steering or suspension problems. Sometimes more than one issue needs to be addressed to fix the symptoms.

Consumer Reports has officially given the Lexus GX the automotive equivalent of a black eye. The publication has deemed the high-riding luxury SUV a "safety risk" for its likelihood to go shiny side down during emergency maneuvers, and as such, has put it on the publication's infamous "Do Not Buy" list. During testing, the Consumer Reports crew found that the traction control on the GX would allow the vehicle to slide nearly completely sideways before getting everything in line.

Interestingly enough, while Consumer Reports tested the nearly-identical Toyota 4Runner, that SUV wasn't found to suffer the same problem with the traction control. Is it possible that all of the luxury goodies you'll find aboard the Lexus add enough pounds to overwhelm the vehicle's stability control, or that the Lexus has significantly different programming? It's possible.

So far, Toyota hasn't said much other than that it's concerned with the Consumer Reports findings. Considering that the Japanese manufacturer has had more than its fair share of bad publicity recently, being blacklisted by CRis just another log on the fire.

Pakistan infrastructure has always been poor. In the recent years in spite of billions spent in Karachi and Lahore, the infrastructure can’t coop up with mad rush of cars and motor bikes on the city roads.

In Lahore, in the recent years there had been a lot of improvements on the city roads. The Canal bank road and Lahore Ring road Roads are only few visible examples.

If one wants to see the manifestation of uncontrolled traffic, Emergency and Neurology Wards in the General Hospital on the Ferozpore road is the place to visit

The MS and other doctors commented that this hospital alone receives 70 to 100 road accident emergencies daily, mostly head injuries

This is an alarming number and the Government as well as civil society must take cognizance of the state of traffic on Lahore city roads.

Increasing number of cars and motorbikes on the roads, inability of the city government to keep up pace with the ever increasing traffic, driver’s licensing policy and lenient ticketing policy and cost of traffic violations are the reasons for the choked traffic and loss of valuable lives on the roads.

In the absence of sound economic and taxation policies and the vested interests; Pakistani manufacturers of automobiles will continue to cause hardships to the consumers. Textile not Automotive Industry needs State protection, textile, which is the main stay of Pakistan domestic as well as export market, is going down due to the energy problems. Why should the Government protect Automotive Industry? It is unjustified and they are charging high rates of profit and encourage dealers to charge premium on their units.

What is the reason for people to buy highly priced cars? Five years back people invested blindly invested in real-estate. With no investment avenues and ever decreasing price of PKR, investment in commodity like gold and cars is on the rise. Bank financing is easily available and anyone with a down payment can own a car

It is the market (demand and supply), Government policies (to protect local car manufacturers, bank finance which is pushing the prices up.

It is easy to get a driving license. There is no system to hold fair written and road tests. It is not that Public Safety offices can’t be organized with the fee paid by those who want to get a license; it is the system which doesn’t understand and implement public safety.

Public safety is an important function of the Government and it should not be handled by the police. Offices at convenient locations should administer written test. These tests should be conducted by computers to avoid short cuts. Anyone with high school education should be able to handle simple computerized test given in Urdu.

Those who pass the written test should be tested by qualified road safety driving testers. The test, conducted in the vehicle of the candidate should include parking, reversing, driving on the city roads , adherence to the displayed speed limits and other signs, lane changing, stopping etc. License should only be issued after a candidate pass examination both written as well as road test.

Traffic ticketing is either lenient or it is inexpensive. Records of traffic violations are not entered on the violator’s license. There is a need for strict legislation and implementation of the traffic laws.

The Government should have a liberal import policy both for the new and used cars. The prices of locally manufactured cars will never come down unless there is a free import policy. As far as the foreign exchange is concerned, it should not cause a burden on the State Bank as expatriates will finance imports of new and used cars and spare parts.

Autos Pak which is the largest web advertiser in automobiles in Pakistan is of the opinion that the market can only be controlled through fair competition and de-regularization of the imports of new and used cars and the public safety can only be ensured through strict legislations, licensing and implementation.

I agree that the laws are not being implemented. On motorway the same laws are implemented and people obey them because of heavy fines.
